Review: New Year's Eve shopping in Melbourne Central - All the best spots (to take your girl)31/12/2016 SportsgirlSportsgirl has very trendy couches right outside the fitting room but the thin cushions definitely reduce the comfort factor significantly. The shop clearly tries to attract a younger crowd with loud music pumping throughout the store, which can be a bit distracting if you're trying to study on your phone but acceptable if you're just playing games. The exclusively white fitting room assistants chatting loudly in high-pitched voices can be a bit distracting too but their pearls of wisdom about the differences between Supre, Temt, and Valleygirl are useful (basically don't go to Temt, the 'pervy nerds' from EB Games next door make girls uncomfortable). Fortunately, the younger crowd the store tries to attract clearly doesn't have as much money as other demographics so your wallet will remain in good shape. All in all, a good store to visit early when you don't mind sitting for a while. Right in the middle of a busy thoroughfare, it doesn't even have its own couches. You have to crash those of the pop-up shoe store nearby with all the attendant olfactory complications of people taking their shoes off around you. The noise of the thoroughfare is quite distracting and makes it difficult to hear the exclusively asian store attendants yelling at you to review your girl's choices as she emerges from the makeshift fitting room. The one saving grace is the store's obviously low overheads and capital costs mean their prices are a steal. Another good one to visit early and fill up on items before hitting the larger stores. They do, however, spare no expense on making shopping companions feel comfortable while waiting to pass judgement on their shopper's choices. Their choice of music was not abrasive and softer in the fitting room area (which everyone knows is where any true shopper will be spending the most time). Of course all this comes at a price and your wallet will not thank you for spending too much time here. But an added bonus is that anyone working in a hospital will feel extra-comfortable. We arrived around 1600, which is when their shifts must change, and felt right at home listening to the shift supervisor doing allocations and directing the multi-ethnicity attendants to where they'd be for the shift. While it's a very comfortable experience, Forever New is definitely one to hit up later in the day when the bags are getting heavier and you need some 'me' time. The size means you can't just sit down and have to walk around with your shopper or risk losing them. The fact that it's in the old heritage-listed GPO building means that all the old structural architecture is intact and visible. In fact if you follow the mail tubes to where they all start you come to a room where nothing is over $10; very poetic I thought. The couches are nothing much and instantly forgettable, and the music isn't great but can hardly be heard over the chattering crowds. Misappropriation of American black culture is rife as well with "#squadgoals" and "on fleek!" emblazoned on many a tank top and running singlet. But as the only interactive store for male shopping companions (they have clothes for men and male store attendants you can actually talk to) and with clothes for only $7 H&M is definitely the pick of the bunch to take your girl shopping.
